Xen Virtual Private Servers (VPS)

Our range of hosting solutions are designed to meet the demands of business and advanced users such as developers, designers or web resellers.

For our purposes, a Xen VPS (Virtual Private Server) is also known as a Xen VDS (Virtual Dedicated Server). They are both referring to the same thing, a virtualised server environment, utilising the Xen virtualisation technology.

When do I need a Xen VPS?

Our Xen based Virtual Dedicated Servers are ideal for when your needs have outgrown the common 'shared hosting' environments. Shared web hosts are infamous for overselling their services by stacking too many sites onto their machines. This can result in poor performance and poor security. Also, you have little or no control over what software is installed on the server.

If you require the additional security and configurability a dedicated server provides, but don't want to expense of a full dedicated server, then a Xen based virtualised server may be the perfect middle ground. Often a totally dedicated server is overkill for a small-medium sized business. They are overpowered and underutilised, resulting in wasted resources for which you are paying.

What do I get with a Xen VPS?

Your server is allocated its own dedicated resources such as IP address(es), RAM and disk space which are not shared with any other servers. Furthermore your virtual server is fully isolated from all other systems on the host node, thus increasing security.

Root access to the server allows you to install the tried and tested mature stable software, or perhaps the very latest bleeding edge software. The choice is yours. If you want the very latest version of PHP or Apache, for example, then you are free to do so.

The Zentua server control panel allows you to create multiple server configurations enabling you to have different versions of your server with different software versions, indeed different Linux distributions, all ready to go at the push of a button.

An additional benefit of virtualisation technology is its scalability. If you find that your server requires more resources to meet increasing needs (e.g. more RAM, disk space, etc) then these can be easily and quickly provisioned within minutes.

Both managed and un-managed virtual dedicated server plans are available depending on your requirements.

Motivations - Why be another hosting provider?

We decided to launch our own hosting services after a number of our consulting clients required hosting. At that time we were using 3rd party hosting providers who didn't always deliver what we needed. We also found that we would end up troubleshooting and diagnosing issues with their networks and services when they arose, and then have to wait until they fixed the problem.

We decided that if we had to do this anyway, then we might as well be responsible for everything ourselves. Simple as that. In theory, at least we should be able to diagnose and remedy any problems ourselves much more quickly than we had experienced elsewhere, instead of waiting for someone else to do it for us. In practice, this has been the case more often than not.

Eliminating the 3rd party providers and becoming responsible for these services ourselves ultimately gave us greater control and flexibility, things we do quite like a lot here at Zentua.
